SubjectFeature request - External packer interface new Reply to this message

Hi,
there is one thing that I really lack in this fantastic, faboulous program :) - an external packing interface.

For instance, you want to pack your files with 7zip or rar or whatever, but since many of the libraries that handle
packing/unpacking, like for instance rar are commercial, it's understandable that it won't be inplemented in a
freeware program, but with an external packing interface, you could have your choise of what format you want to
pack your files in.

Why?
There are so many better packing engines out there then zip, packers the pack up to 30% better then zip.
That's a lot when you have many roms/sets but limited disk space.

With an external packing interface, you could just choose whatever packing program that you prefare with parameters.
The interface would just execute that program that you specify, and report back any output so you could see if
something has gone bad. (Just like ZipMax)

An interface could look like something like this:

External program to unpack: /
External program to pack: /

Please Roman, give it some thought? :)

Regards,
Abs

Most emulators don't support RAR and most of these packers aren't free or use solid archives which is a rather stupid thing if you want to use the archives directly. 7z isn't yet standarized anyway.

ClrMamePro uses a lot of lowlevel zip stuff like direct renaming without recompressing, etc. I'm not interested in porting that to rar et al ;) Maybe in a ClrMame rewrite you'll be able to add your own archive dlls....but currently there is no need.

Diskspace is cheap.
