I mainly create profiles from official mame builds and intermediate builds. recently i created a profile from mame32plus (i know mame32plus listxml is broken, but why would it affect other profiles?). profiles work fine. but for some reason now, everytime i start cmpro and choose either mame or mameplus profiles, it has to update its database and go through the receiving data process. everytime i choose a profile it does this. never used to do this. i have deleted and recreated the profiles. no change. dont know if i've had too many lagers or it's a fluke.

Because you've chosen "MAME" as emulator basis and if you look at engine.cfg it uses the same cachefile. Simply add an entry to engine.cfg with a different cachefilename and you're done.
