You use it exactly as for roms. Get the datfile, setup the rompaths, scan.
Don't forget the 2 main scanning modes:

rompath\setname\rom 1 ... rom n for unzipped sets
rompath\setname.zip for zipped sets

No matter if you scan flyers/etc. So basically you have to setup the rompath correctly. Also take a look at the setname of the datfiles. Flyers/etc datfiles usually have only 1 set with all roms/pngs in it.
For example: the only set in the flyers datfile is called "flyers". So if you keep it zipped, the set is named flyers.zip. Keep that in a rompath...e.g. d:\mame\flyers\flyers.zip. If you keep the files unzipped you have to keep it in a subpath (named flyers) of your rompath: d:\mame\flyers\flyers\
