Steps to reproduce.

1) Import new dat
2) select directory other than default
3) rename the dat before loading it
4) notice the directory name is pre-pended with a - instead of /

workaround: delete the directory name from the dat name before saving it. it retains the directory information automatically.

Don't do that. It's not intended to rename a datfile which doesn't have a belonging settingsfile yet. Although it's possible and I will disable that in the next version.
The replacement of / with - is intentional, since you aren't allowed to use filesystem related characters in a profile name (\:*? etc). The notused/new folder is the only folder where you don't see the profilename (since no profile exists yet). Neither you see the real datfilename there. I preattached parts of the path so people can see where the datfile will be placed when you create a profile for it. Renaming doesn't make sense, since you rename profiles, not datfiles. I did have to change the menu text though 8)

Whenever I rename one it retains the name i choose when i load it.

And when i look at the dats, it renames the description field. So i guess i'm not sure why you can't rename them before you load them.

Because the renaming option is made for profiles and not for datfiles.

Besides if you look at the wip page you see that several profile/datfile related things were already changed for the next version.
