If you haven't done so, perhaps a read of http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/ might be in order as well.

Rom-path and Sample-path are all that's required to scan Mame. Add-paths come into play if you tick 'Fix Missing' in the Scanner window. If CMP detects that you are missing a rom, it will look in these path(s) for the missing files. For example, when Mame is next updated, you can place the updated files in an add-path, and CMP will rebuild them into your existing set.
