You use non-rom specific data (e.g. png files for MAME misc artwork) in the same way as you know it from MAME with roms. Sets stay sets of files, roms correspond to the files inside the sets, so anything with a given length and checksum and a name.

You only have to care about setting up rompaths correctly. Always keep in mind the 2 scan modes:

rompath\setname\file 1 ... file n for unzipped sets
rompath\setname.zip for zippped sets where file 1..file n are stored in the zipfile.

So take a look at the used datfile and setup rompaths accordingly.
