I posted a few months ago asking if it would be possible for the profiler to update dats like mameinfo, highscore, history, and cheat.

I think you were concerned at the time that this feature could in some way be adversely used in the wrong hands.

In light of this- I have revised the request: would it be possible for CMP to scan the route MAME folder & identify which dats are out-of-date?

Identify old dats only- not link to the updated files. With this in mind- perhaps it would be wise to limit scans to dats associated with official final MAME releases.

For this you need version information inside the dats and you need to know how this version correspond to the used mame version. At least hiscore.dat and history.dat doesn't have such information at all and/or their numbering system doesn't match anything similar to mame.
There is no real connection to MAME's setdatabase anyway, the future of some dats is highly unknown either. Any RSS reader will do what you want ... keeping you informed update new dats.
