SubjectToo many bad ROMs around! new Reply to this message

The more I look at my ROMs and see what is being served out there, I wonder if ANYONE has a true complete set of thouroughly verified ROMs. Good Utilities only rename and sort ROMs. I noticed that some ROMs in about 3 different formats/file extensions check fine with GoodSNES and used to fail in my ClrMame Pro scans. Too bad the DATs are not ready
yet for the newest Good Utilities of SNES and PCE. This stuff drives me crazy. I hope one day that these ROMs would have a difinitive format like .bin or something like the Genesis set. SNES ROMs have like 6 different formats/file extensions. Why? Another thing I notice is that so many knuckleheads have messed with the headers of these ROMs that you hardly can find any that are unmodified. What a mess! Hopefully one day ClrMame will be able to fix all these things in the future.

Anyone agree with my rant?

You need headerless romfiles for clrmamepro. Goodtools ignore headers, ClrMamePro doesn't.

It has nothing to do with ClrMamePro. You simply have to remove the headers from the mentioned files.

Are headers native to the ROMs after they are dumped or are they added by people and not supposed to exist at all as part of the dump?

Added by people and dumping software. Mostly used for specific emulators and in most cases not needed.

So now the question is: What utility can we use to remove the headers? I found a couple, but none that were reliable or worked with long file names.
