For MAME and other emulators, you don't need datfiles. clrmamepro can directly extract the data from the emulator binaries. For example: Profiler->Create->Executable Type: MAME and let the filename point to your MAME exe file. Hit Create and you're done. When you update the exe, cmpro will automatically detect that and updates as well.

No. clrmamepro is accurate. In fact it's stricter than most people expect and more accurate and more detailed than MAME's audit options. "Moan" because the scan results tree lists sets with issues.
