right now i have all my mame roms in one directory called "mame".

i want to know how i can get the cps1, cps2 and neogeo roms out of the "mame" dir and into their own dirs: "cps1" "cps2" and "neogeo" respectively.

You can't do that easily. You can only do it easily for 'systems'. Systems are based on biosfiles. For example neogeo, playchoice10 etc. CPS1,2 on the other hand don't use a biosset.

To split up by systems, you can define system-default-paths in the 'systems' window. There's also a 'move sets' button to split them up quickly. To keep these paths in the future, you need to use these paths for scanner's fix missing and rebuilder's destination as well. There are options for it.

For sets which aren't bind to a biosset you can either use different, system based datfiles or a datfile which uses rebuildto tags.
