if i have a bunch of chds in a folder is there something that'll scan them and put them in their proper subfolders? cuz some of them have really non-descriptive filenames, i'm trying clrmame but getting nowhere

Put them in a pure rompath (no rompath subfolder) and scan them (all check options enabled). clrmamepro will tell you where to put them and when you got the fix options enabled, it will automatically move them to their correct place.
