SubjectTorrent Zip new Reply to this message

Hi,

This is a point for discussion that may then lead to a feature request.

Would it be possible to have clrmamepro re-compress with TorrentZip to allow the gamer's working set of roms and extras available for sharing with bittorrent such as at http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk? The idea is that clrmamepro would have an option for this that would force recompression using TorrentZip and set all other options appropriately, such as forcing split sets. The gamer would have to set their bittorrent client paths to point to the appropriate files, but it should be possible.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on this proposal?

Zax

This kind of question is really frequently asked here (i don't know how Roman keeps is calm down !).
You can take a look on older posts, even right in this page and you will find infos...

Afaik, torrentzip library are not open source, no ?
That's what i understood...

But what is the interess of using torrenzip rather than winzip ?
Avoid some sharing errors (that's what i've read somewhere...) ?
So few things...
It's only my 2 cents after all...
What is it for ?
Help emukidding and pokerom collectors downloading more torrent or maintain your set torrentzipped to have only few files to download each updates of pleasuredome ?
Bah...
Or perhaps you make torrent ?
If i could, i'd even delete fileinfo 'this torrentzip' add to ziparchives !... (i asked for this to Roman but he regrettably said NO).
I'm clearly against... :)

Or explain the interress ?

Discussed a billion times (see forum threads..)....it won't be supported.

It's very easy.

You guys use torrent zip to illegally spread zips. Yes you do...and some people (esp. manufacturers of some arcade games) don't like this and asked me to kill all torrentzip users.

To sum it up: it won't be supported. Of course the zips (since they are still standard zips) can be read, but I won't add any functionality to reorganize the set to fit torrentzip-style again. Besides it will slow down the whole process.

torrentzip is opensource, the project is hosted on sourceforge :)

Torrentzip creates identical zip files on every system out there, which means if you compress blah.rom on Windows, Linux, Unix, OSX, the created zip will be bit-identical. Other packers might create smaller zip files like the zip-packer of 7zip or kzip, but that was not the goal of torrentzip.

Probably right. As torrentzipped files are always identical, people only need to download what has changed and people with partial sets can join in and don't need to start from 0%. :)

There might be some tool that can strip comments of a zipfile by hand.

Making sharing of roms easier. But I see no use for torrentzip in ClrMame. An option to delete comments in zipfiles would be nice, maybe.

Those who need it can run it by hand in my opinion. I prefer smaller packed zip files anyway. :P
