anytime I cancel when starting a rebuild and the files are being counted... I'll get a cancel y/n question... when I answer yes, it just keeps on going and I have to cancel a second time

During which process exactly did you press cancel? There are some processes where the current process it being finished when clicking cancel...

when starting a rebuild on with a large set of source files... when it is counting them... I understand the wait for an actual cancel to occur, but it completely "forgets" that I asked for a cancel, it just plows on rebuilding after the counting is done...

Yes, countfiles is one of the functions which can't be cancelled. You have to wait.
Maybe I change this behaviour after my holiday.
