SubjectClrMame unbelievably slow on my NAS new Reply to this message

I thought I'd be smart and put my ROM collection on a new Gigabit NAS.

Games load slower which is to be expected, but ClrMame is INCREDIBLY slow across the NAS. I know SMB isn't the greatest for small file access, but after 5 minutes it was still on 0%. I look at the network traffic and it's about 1500 bytes a second (what the heck...).

Any ideas on speeding it up? I'm starting to think my NAS is a total wash.

Well....cmpro only does standard c/c++ standard file access operations...and I somehow doubt that the libraries have major issues with accessing files over the net. So I suspect that something's wrong with your setup...timing issues...some other stuff interfearing (accessrights, virusscanners etc).
Of course you should also check if you're scanning with some of the slow-down features like sha1 check etc ;)

Maybe googling for NAS + Windows API CreateProcess and MFC CreateFile calls may find something...I will check this..

Reading is fine, I can actually copy those files to my HD faster than ClrMame can scan them.

(I should have mentioned in my post, I am not doing a rebuild or anything, I am just performing a scan).

well...what do you scan (MAME, iso images ;)) and what's your turned on options? E.g. if you scan with sha1 checks enabled on huge files, it may take a while.....
Also again, try to disable a possible virusscanner (at least for the rompaths).

You can't compare a scan (which does some random access/seek operations to the file) with an OS' copy operation

sha1 is not enabled, and it's just my MAME set (ie. for missing on a new MAME update). Is just incredibly slow for whatever reason. I remember doing it over the network before and it was slow, but not this slow. I think the DLink NAS is a piece of junk.

Hmm...could be...People should prefer local HDs (or external eSATA ones)...A full scan takes 90 seconds and with a good diskcache 7seconds ;))

Let me know if you find something which solves your issue.

Sure does, but then I don't have access to it across several computers.

Might just maintain the collection on a local (well, eSATA) and then use sync software to put it on my NAS. If I don't stick it on eBay in the next 20 minutes that is.

Returned the NAS. Piece of junk.
