Random checksum errors are definetly caused by hardware problems. This can be caused by a bad (or cheap) ide cable, bad chipsetdrivers (older via chipsets are known to cause bitflips), bad ram or bad ram timing and of course a corrupt harddisk (which I think is rather uncommon).
If you ask me it's the cable.....
