Kerry really didn't have a platform. Saying "I can do better" and "I have a plan" are not viable platforms for a campaign. Kerry couldn't get the Democrats together. The only thing that they had in common was that they wanted to oust Bush. Bush attacked Kerry and Kerry went on trying to justify himself. That doesn't work. Also, people 18-35 don't want superstars (or anyone for that matter) telling them what to do. Or if they listened, they voted for the incumbent. These concerts actually hurt Kerry's platform and may cause the Democrats to rethink using popular people in their cause.
