you could interpret it that way, it basically means a person is not mainstream in views/thinking/actions

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=left%20field

Informal. A position far from the center or mainstream, as of opinion or reason: opinions that are out in left field.

I think in USA when people say you're out on the left field it also means you are more liberal, and the right you are more conservative

If left and weird/abnormal are now synonyms, is half of the USA made of weird people?

(yes, kilometer, not mile)

If you're on the left, you're liberal. If you're on the right, you're conservative. If you're out in left field, you're a wingnut, and could be weird on either side of the political spectrum, depending on the person saying the phrase.

As soon as you add "field", it ceases to have political connotations other than it's weird compared to what you think. Typically, it's a phrase that's a little older, most people don't use it. Mostly used when you say something random.

"Hey Bob- you ever farted in the bathtub?"

"Well Jim, that was way the fuck outta left field, wasn't it?"

If you look at a baseball field, you're supposed to look at home base as the center, or the place you most desire to get to. The outfield, "left field" is the furthest distance from the plate.
When you say that, you're trying to express something obscure, or far away.

Since most right handed batter always hit the ball to left field, I'll bet that's why the expression was chosen. Back in High School I would drink Vodka right before P.E. and purposely play right field so nothing would bring down my buzz.

It means pulling an idea (not always but sometimes a strange one) out of nowhere.

example:
That crazy bastard had a genius plan, he came right out of left field with that one.
