but i guess that one is still going on. Back in the day though, when people first found out that you could make Gekko play more than just Nam75 if you renamed some roms, it was pretty tight. How about when Raz tried to corner the market on NeoGeo stuff too, by XORing KoF99 and whatever else?

Thank god the encryption was broken on that system.

Anymore it's all about writing custom mame drivers to run bootleg dumps of Neo Geo carts, and that's just not as interesting as the CPS2 flame wars (which it's nice to see start back up).

Hum, didn't know about that, all I remember is when the roms for kof99 went out, there was a couple of versions, some were encrypted... all the shit following that "you shouldn't play this game" "dumping this is wrong, it's just got that" "where's the romz doodz!? I got them all, I am reirom", yeah I have some memories of that period.

oh oh, and then there was swampra complaining about CA wasting bandwidth...a classic!

Even MAME seems to have gone sloppy. Nothing on the "offical" WIP, patched released every other day with the slightest of changes, truckload of non-working games enabled, completly unplayable speeds.
I haven't bothered to check if any games i'd be interest in have been added since about .81-.83
I guess there's just no more great breakthroughs for emulation anymore, it's just downhill from now on. That and the emulation of newer systems. I'm still waiting for someone to start an N64 emu from scratch to rival the likes of ZSNES, GENS, VBA and what-not. I think about 20-35% of the N64's library must still be unplayble through emulation.

Don't count on a new N64 emulator anytime soon. Why bother when you can halfass a ton of excuses and then just make a frame to load stupid plugins in a fraction of the time?

Biggest fraud recently was 1964's release, a total joke. Nothing for like 1-2years except hype with images. If you read between the lines you heard about a Rice plugin. Well fucking hilarious that it works in Project64 as well *AND* enables all the same games 1964 supposedly only does like DK64.

N64 emulation is a fraud and has been for years. I think the only real efforts ever were the pre-1964 and PJ64 projects (not including UHLE.)

Its most likely a codec error... try the Win version of mplayer, which does not require installation and carries its own codecs. Just extract that file somewhere, then drag and drop the AVI file on mplayer.exe ... and you're good to go. :)
