it's modified gpl, the source can be distributed for such builds, but not the binaries, iirc. no court cases have established this as 'word of law' but in the open-source community such things seem to be taken as such, because they want to respect the authors' wishes. i think it's better those builds are not distributed in binary form, to keep The Man from putting their collective nose where it isn't welcome, but i can't say i personally haven't benefitted from 'illegal' builds that i didn't compile myself. i don't really respect the programmers of the games themselves because they get paid decently for what they do. i respect the mame team because they do what they do for free [aside from the benefits of the boards and stuff they get], and they don't charge for it either.
