I'd rather have that explanation that no explanation at all. Did you catch that scene with the Thule society at the very end? Its kind of a hint of how things will end... at least they let Edward come off a little bit more noble than his father (unless the father is working for the big british guy - hard to be more clear without spoiling). It's pretty obvious Edward will never attain what he's looking for at the end, too.

Dunno, maybe its a Japanese thing that they don't tell you everything directly. I've seen endings that are very obvious and it kind of ruins the whole thing (Evangelion...).
