SubjectWith Teeth vs The Downward Spiral Reply to this message

I listened to the whole With Teeth CD and then The Downward Spiral and I feel that NIN actually lost progress over the past 10 years. I think that The Downward Spiral almost seems to sound more industrial and has better use of random sounds/samples than does With Teeth. Even some of the beats in DS seem a lot cooler than those in WT. WT seems more like just some modern rock album. I do like the Dolby AC3 mixes though, they're pretty neat but if DS had AC3 it would totally own WT.

Seems like their sound made a lotta progress between Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral but after DS it went downhill from there. Did they lose a band member or what? The sound of The Fragile wasn't bad but I liked the dirty industrial sound of the previous albums.

sorry man but it has become very apparent ya just don't know shit about nin.
here's some help:

  • nin == trent reznor in the studio along with producer du jour, then there is the live band he puts together when he feels like playing live
  • t.d.s & the fragile where "experimental/concept" albums
  • p.h.m. & w.t. are standard pop albums**
  • t.d.s. was released last year on multichanel sacd & dvd-audio

**not listing broken since it was an ep and not a full lp.

Reznor usually backs up appealing music with good lyrics that parallel the music. In this albums, it's pitifully rehashed themes without even fresh lyircs; even they are repeated way too much in the album.

Repetitive lyrics that are good are not really bothersome, but these are not good.

The music behind it is generally good but unemotional. I have to agree with Snowball about most of what he said, but I think it should be noted that PHM wasn't meant to be a pop album before the record execs got to him, or at least not as much. I think it ironically forced him to do more work and make the album better, though the comparable versions of songs on the original album were generally better.

The Fragile is good but only in parts; Stuff like Starfuckers Inc. just make me cringe at the self-absorbtion.

Broken is great apart from Physical (You're so).

Downward Spiral is still great in my mind.

    PHM Is good 80s trash.

Trents stuff with Bowie is the highpoint of his career.

Bowies stuff with Trent is his lowpoint.

Trent sounds like saying Trench when you have a cold.

Trent Donkey punches women whilst listening to the song 'Rawhide'

Trent and Rawhide are intrinsically and bafflingly linked, much in the same way that Rammstein are linked with 'Hee-Haw'

NINs original name was going to be 'Playing the harpsichord'

NIN is the same when spelt backwards.

'I' is the middle word of 'NIN'

INN is an anagram of NIN

So is NNI, which is a sound I make when I poop

Some people just don't like NIN - Some people do.

Arguing about a hugely popular band is silly; There are no winners or losers, just Audiophiles with a feeling of self-worth.
