Xwing was great, but requiring you to complete the secondary objectives made a few of those missions too god damn hard. I remember playing through that whole damn game using a gravis gamepad because I just didn't know any better. I wish I still had those kinds of skills, heh.
Tie Fighter fixed pretty much every complaint I had about XWing, but I couldn't play it with the gourad shading turned on unless I wanted it to run slower than Vortex on the SNES :( Cursed 25mhz cpu.
Wing Commander 1 and 2....now THOSE were fucking brilliant. The storylines really pulled you in and you really felt like you were a major part of the war. The hatred for the cats burned deep and by god, I shead a tear or two for my fallen wingmen :( The storyline in 2 in particular was solid gold and it's a damn shame that none of the other games in the series have really managed to match its greatness.
Never have been able to get it working perfectly in DOSbox. Do you have a .conf file for it offhand? I played through Wing Commander in DOSbox when it was first compatible with it (using my sidewinder percision pro..it was sex) and then Tie Fighter (win95 edition...just happened to work fine on my box, thank god) notlong after.. good times, good times.
Have you played the remake of Privateer yet? Outside of some performance gripes and the fact that the asteroids aren't all that deadly in the remake, I've had quite a good time with it. Never much cared for the storyline, but I sure as shit loved hunting retros and running contraband. Tripling up on missions to make shit loads of money quick rocked, too.
