SubjectA Question for the Dads Reply to this message

You have a son who is 16 years old, screwing up in continuation school (D's and F's), plays in a band, but won't even pick up his own equipment, doesn't pick up after himself, anywhere, doesn't shower but once every 2 weeks, lies about everything, smokes weed, and is drunk regularly after continuation school (ends at noon). Now the question. What would you do with your kid in this situation? I personally think this father is a terrible one. He does not discipline his son at all. He is not playing parent, he is playing friend. Not good. I would not let him even in my home if he continued to act that way, if he is so smart, and knows the way of the world, I'd let him go do it, just not under my roof.

Complete prison situation. No car, no privledges, a bed and a room with his schoolbooks and a lock on the outside. He stays in his room aside from meals with the family, and school. He is driven to school every day and picked up directly after, aside from school sanctioned activites. He is allowed visits from his friends if they are supervised. You get the idea.

As soon as he learns to behave in a manner that his father wants him to, he earns his stuff back slowly. If he fucks up, everything is taken away and he starts from square one.

Now that's obviously an extreme example, but I'm a firm believer that children of that age need a complete jail situation. I guess I'll let you know if I still feel that way in 10.5 years when my son turns sixteen.

He needs a positive role model and must realize the consequences of his own actions

maybe that would work, i had no respect for male authority figures so i wouldn't know- it didn't work for me, nothing did. i was a complete asshole at that age, to everyone, and dean will agree. some kids can't be helped until they help themselves. just don't beat the fucker. that is the one thing i can say seriously created more contempt and hatred without any positive effects whatsoever inside my malformed childbrain.

Most kids are assholes at that age, I was. I would never touch my child, but I think at that age parents need to be like wardens. Eventually, most children do help themselves in most ways, and I would certainly encourage him as much as I could, while being militant in my discipline.

I like my Hanson

You have so many relationships in this life,
But only one or two will last.
You go through all the pain and strife,
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast.

Oh yeah. they’re gone so fast.

Oh, so hold on to the ones who really care,
In the end they’ll be the only ones there.
When you get old and start losing your hair,
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care? oh care.

Chorus:

Mmmbop, ba duba dop ba do bop,
Ba duba dop ba do bop,
Ba duba dop ba do. oh yeah,
Mmmbop ba duba dop ba do bop,
Ba duba dop ba do bop,
Ba duba dop ba do

Oh yeah, in an mmmbop they’re gone. yeah.

Plant a seed, plant a flower,
Plant a rose, you can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows.
It’s a secret no one knows.
It’s a secret no one knows.
Oh, no one knows.

Like I would even know where to buy that crap, much less how to spell it.
All I know is that it sounds like a Frenchman having sex with a transexual on Jerry Springer.
