SubjectWhat kind of savage throws out their game cases? Reply to this message

Just curious and piggybacking on my previous post, but why the fuck do people throw out their cd/dvd game cases and/or manuals? What the fuck is the logic behind that?

Most people don't own more than a dozen or so games for any one system, and you mean to tell me that they chuck their fucking cases that are designed to hold/protect their games? What the fuck? And what's with the people that keep the cases but throw out the manuals? What the fuck is up with that?

And if you're one of these people, do you also throw out your DVD movie cases and cd music cases?

and dont care about collector's value, or the art / etc.

I personally love cases, mostly for the art but if it relates to something i care to "collect" (or, more commonly, it's a game I love) I'll keep the packaging. I never threw cases or manuals away and if the shrinkwrap had a game-specific sticker (or album) I kept that, too. The reasons presented are not good reasons to throw shit away, but reasons nontheless.

I try to keep everything as nice as possible now. When i was a kid, i couldn't give two shits about it (I always kept my snes manuals, but i have very few boxes). I pretty much keep everything now. I never throw away a cd/dvd case, since that's the best way to keep them in good condition. But then again, i rarely buy games, since i don't play as much anymore.

my question is, why do people sell so many games? I always end up seeing people at eb selling their games for a couple bucks, when they probably paid 40 for it originally. I find it wierd, that you see the occasional regular walk in, and their trading games like they're renting from blockbuster. They trade in 5 games for a new one. I swear, eb makes a killing off these people. Then they always try to get ME to buy the used version, so that *I* can save money ;)

I have never sold a game. I guess i never had a need to. I usually do my research before i go out and spend 50 bucks, otherwise, i find the 1-2 year old games for 20 bucks.

I would go as far as cutting them up to flatten them (removing all the useless junk inside to give them shape), but it will take an act of nature to separate me from my old manuals and boxen. :-) Which is why I like the "new" small PC game cases, much easier to pile up than the previou A4-sized boxes.

i don't remember the last time i bought a console game.. oh wait. def jam for gamecube a while back.. i kept the case because it was plastic. i didn't keep my NES boxes, but i kept my sega ones when they were in the shell cases. the only pc game i've bought since the retail boxes were made smaller is ut2004, and i still have the case for that one, since it is pretty high quality cardboard and sadly there aren't jewel cases for the CDs.

when i had a playstation of course i kept the jewel cases, and i keep the jewel cases for my albums and the clamshells for my dvds. if i bought current generation videogames i'd keep the cases as long as they weren't shitty paper.

You know I have always wanted a reason for that level of incompetence and stupidity. I should take this over to the game site I work for on the boards I admin and see if I can find a moron to report back to you here with.

I find people who toss out all that stuff and just keep the game in a sleeve/drawer whatever to be complete slobbish assholes. I mean those parts of the package are nearly as important as the game itself. You may forget a move or need to know something of the game, manual has it. And like you finish the game, then what? Pray it don't get damaged or lost like a moron? Just keep the damn box and put it in a larger box or on a shelf all nice and pretty. I mean it's really common sense. I for one keep since the disc generation the case+manual, before that I would keep the dust clip + manual, and even with used stuff almost never will I get a game at all unless it at least has the dust jacket (say for hard to get NES titles.)

Stupid people do stupid stuff.

...and think of the space that can be saved by using just the slipcase. you can shove the manual in that fucker too. don't need more than that. it's not a collection for showing off or something, it's toys that i want to play with easily, that i don't want to get damaged, but don't want to take up massive amounts of space and get in the way. i like having the original games because there's something neat about playing them on the same old NES with the same old controller, but i have no desire to create a fucking museum display.

but a powerloss made me lose it.

Let me summon then : i am freak, i keep every box, manual, etc, for pretty much everything i own (games, music, movies, guitar, guitar stuff, etc).

my gf says that i am nuts because of it, because in her words : "you won't play/listen/watch/enjoy the box, but the (insert product)."

but she is talking non-sense.

That is the summonned up version.

Damn straight she is. You're not gonna live in the same place forever, either, are ya? Well, when you move, if you don't have the boxes, you stand a greater chance of fucking things up than if you do, which means YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO FUCKING ENJOY IT, 'CAUSE IT'S FUCKING BROKEN.

Now you take that bitch out back and you TELL her that.

honestly, some boxes are good. protective plastic shells for the shit inside. i dig it. cardboard? not so much. especially thin cardboard. keeping thin cardboard boxes, especially if they are large, is nothing more than a waste of space. fuck that.

Should be "Let me sum it up then."

Should be "That is the summed up version." or even more correctly "That is the summarized version."

I point this out not because I am a grammar nazi, but because everyone I know who doesn't speak english as their first languauge usually like to know when they make a big mistake.

The words 'summon' and 'summarize' have very different meanings. One basically means to add or group together, the other to call on spirits or demons.

i will summon my demon to hunt you down like a fox.
i will then sum you to my collection of hunted foxes.
then i will drink in your honor

like a true knight of the round should do.

I threw out some of my dvd cases to save space. I keep most of my dvds in a cd wallet. Who cares because in 3 years flea markets are going to be flooded with dvds that nobody wants like it is now with vhs.

I of course keep the special ones like the Disney Treasures with the tins in good shape but for stuff like Bad Santa I remove the artwork and throw the case out.

SubjectIn CD based games, I just don't understand new Reply to this message

When I used to have SNES/NES/N64 games, the cardboard boxes would get bent and crushed ALL THE GODDAMN TIME. I ended up throwing them out and just keeping the manuals (most of which I lost since I no longer had a box). However, in any other instance, I always keep the games and their cases and manuals. In fact, I refuse to buy a game unless it has a case and manual. I have a CD binder and I keep all my cases in one place, so I don't see how space is an issue. PS2/X-Box/Gamecube cases hardly take up that much space. If anything, just keep them all in a big box, and keep the games elsewhere. Problem solved.

SubjectI used to ... new Reply to this message

... when I was 6 or 7, and assumed the box was just like the packaging for any other toy, and therefore disposable (didn't matter so much anyway, as it was cassettes for an Amstrad CPC, and the case doesn't provide all that much protection).

Actually, I've thrown away cartridge packaging more recently. Was strapped for space at one stage, so I threw out my SNES boxes (not the instructions) and the outer-packaging for some Game Gear games. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to sell them on anyway, and don't have room to have them on display, so why keep them?

CD/DVD games are a different matter - they serve a protective purpose.

I live in an efficiency apartment with my girlfriend, we don't have the space to keep bulky cases. We each have 100CD cases to hold our music, movies, and video games...

When you live in a cramped apartment, you have to work with your limits...

I do try and keep documentation when I can, but it's not a must have when I buy used games...
If I can play the game, that's all that matters...

I'll grant you my Genesis is at my mothers, my Super Nintendo is in the closet, but I keep my Dreamcast hooked up, and the same for my Playstation 2 and Gamecube, and hopefully, I'll get my Nintendo 64 up as well...
