It's really not that big of a problem, though. You have plenty of different means to dispatch of crowds of enemies, such as grenades and rockets for humans and the little sonic wave thing for T'lan, not to mention your little shield thingy. If you keep an enemy between you and the rest of the crowd when you fight then you'll do a lot better, too. The largest crowd I've had to engage so far is 5 or 6, I believe.
The game just simply requires you to play differently than you're used to, and I think a lot of people had trouble grasping that and were expecting something more run n gun based like Halo or Half Life.
