I've had The Longest Journey for a few years now (originally bought the 4 disc release, got frustrated around chapter 4 and quit, then bought the 2 disc version and am finally playing through it), and I can see where a lot of people would consider it among the best adventure games of all time. The storyline, dialogue, and voice acting are all top notch and really put damn near everything else to shame. The in game graphics are fantastic (mixing great 2d and 3d graphics, similar to what the Playstation Final Fantasy games tried), and I'll cockpunch anyone who dares say anything negative about the music.
Unfortunatly, the puzzles in the game are really, really inconsistant. Sometimes they're easy, sometimes they're fun and tricky, and sometimes they're just tedious and/or too focused around trial and error. The communication array puzzle in chapter 8? The crystal puzzle in chapter 7? Fuck them both in their asses right back to the days of Sierra adventures. There's too many "choke points" like those that drag the game to a halt and really fudge up the otherwise great atmosphere and gameplay.
Having experienced both the 4cd and 2cd versions, I'd probably rate the 4cd a 7/10 and the 2cd an 8/10 (going from semi-annoying disc swapping to zero disc swapping is always a good thing), but those crazy niggahs that throw out a 10/10 to the game are fucking smoking crack.
....but I guess if you were giving out ratings based on the coolest fucking NPC ever, you'd have to give a 10/10 to "The Flipster".
