IIRC, the VHS cost something like $30-40, which is high compared to DVD new releases, but was downright reasonable compared to most VHS new releases, which were usually $80-90 (this to satisfy the likes of Cocksucker Blockbuster).
That said, I don't disagree with you concerning his motives (including the new new new new new new new new new new new release).
