And so far I'm impressed. Put the sucker right into the drive and loaded right up. Had to manually configure my network because I don't use DHCP, but seems to run great on my setup. Now to take on our locked down WinXP computers at work... ;-)

The last time I tried I still had to deal with the command line to get my goddam wireless network card to work. You can take care of some simple things in Gnome or KDE (knoppix uses KDE, right?) but chances are you'll still be fucking around in the shell prompt bullshit. I know distros like Ubuntu are all ultra-easy to install but as long as I still need to use the command line to take care of the critical components of the OS I will avoid linux like the plague. I don't memorize commands, I don't sit around and fucking memorize the goddam options and I know that GREP is candy but I don't give a shit. It's 2006. Fuck command line interfaces. I don't need mega control over my OS. I load it up, I watch porn, I shut it off.

SubjectKnoppix 5.0.1 seems all gui based new Reply to this message

As far as setting up my network (IP, subnet mask, gateway, dns) it was all GUI driven, as was setting up a network printer (my brother HL-1440 on an edimax print server).

Granted you really can't save your settings with Knoppix, but setting such stuff up only took minutes to do and I'm not really a linux junky, i just wanted something I could use to break into the pc's at work (for serious ;) because i want to put a couple shortcuts in the start up folder because i'm sick of not having them launch at boot or login.

For me the problem is not the OS. It usually works out of the box as long as I have hardware that's not too new. My gripe is that every single time that I want to install a new program, I have to go through a convoluted process to configure it. Last time I've tried (setting up a MythTv box with emulators) I've had to actually recompile a program to change key settings! That's what bothers me with the whole Linux thingy - the audience is assumed to be command-line programmers. I'm a programmer, but still want my stuff to work out of the box.
