Is there even such a thing?
Between BP, Mobil, Shell, Exxon, and Hess...
What are your thoughts?

My friend's Dad creates all the Techron formulas for Chevron. He said the next one coming out will burn so well you won't know there's detergent in the gas. 76 still makes my car run the best.

I think those are the only Top Tier fuels we have here other than the 110 and 112 octane fuels.

I think anyone in this list should offer the best fuels.

So I want to make sure I put the best recommended gas into it. I have driven a 2001 civic for the longest, and it took 87 just fine, so now I want to make sure I'm getting the right gas for my 'bimmer'

Then again, you get regular colon flushes, so I can see how such matters might be of utmost importance to you.

The way I see it is this: if you're buying name-brand gasoline, you're most likely getting reasonably good stuff. There MAY be a couple name brands that MAY be lesser quality (e.g., ARCO), but the really big names are fairly consistent. In my case, I usually get gas from wherever's cheapest and most convenient (ranging from grocery store gas to name brand (which is rare for me)) and I haven't noticed a real change in my car's performance. Then again, I drive a shitbox 13-y-o Cavalier (which still got 30+ mpg from here to Scottsdale (120 mi., gas-station-to-door) in 90 minutes).

Subjecthow can you have fuel over 100 octane? new Reply to this message

To my understanding 100 octane points means that the fuel will not explode under pressure, fuel can't explode less than not exploding.

Shell, Exxon, BP, Mobil, Texaco, Hess (the only ones I would consider anyhow). I take flaxseed dammit, no colon flushes for me! Bejesus... O_o

100 octane fuel means that the fuel burns in the same way as pure isooctane burns. Zero octane means that the fuel burns in the same way as pure n-heptane burns. 100 or higher octane absolutely does not mean that fuel does not burn; it simply burns more slowly than standard pump gas.

Edit: Come to that, upon rereading your original post, any gasoline (petrol) explodes under pressure; this is A Bad Thing in a gasoline (Otto cycle) engine (see knock and ping). However, this is the way diesel engines work (compression ignition vs. spark), so if diesel burns under compression, sure as shit gasoline does (note: diesel fuel doesn't work in a gas engine, at least not for very long). Of course, gasoline will probably fuck up a diesel engine due to extreme preignition, but I'll leave that to you to fuck up test on your engine.

Turbo car tune for 100 octane = win

Also, some places have 94 and 95 octane.

IF YOU'RE BUYING NAME-BRAND, (particularly (what's left) of national brand names) THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

SRSLY.

But I figured since I have this "luxury" car now, there might actually be a difference out there.. you're probably right.

That tends to be governed more by air-fuel mix than by octane number (in fact, air-fuel mix is fairly constant for hydrocarbons outside of methane and maybe ethane). Of course, that doesn't speak to octane vs. efficiency considerations that are common to high horsepower engines like what you might find in, oh, say, A 2006 BMW OR WHATNOT.

Look, if your manual says stick to premium, stick to premium. With gas prices the way they are now, it's not like it's THAT big of a difference (<10%).

The only brands I've ever heard make some claim to purity are Amoco (now BP, but back in the day I wouldn't buy Amoco simply because they were significantly more expensive) and Chevron (which I haven't seen east of El Paso (and maybe not even that far east)). Like I said, I don't really buy into it.

When in CA I used either Shell or Mobil. Shell barely has a presense where I am now, and I never see mobil so here in Kentucky I use BP(British Petroleum) or Thorntons which works quite nicely for me.

I stay away from the ghetto gas like Swifty, ma 'n pa crap, Speedway, J-Pilot, and a few others.
