Somewhat so it is, but only in that if you don't buy games that force system updates (which you don't know until you find out online or when you get updated and your system 'bricks.')

More headache than it's worth. The DS though has some nice emulators and Nintendo hasn't put sneaky software in there. There's NES, SNES, GB's, C64, 2600 I think, and more.
