I'd like it if we could at least build a new site that has some forums. And when I say build a site I mean find some easy-cheesy content management system you can get on the web and slap a new skin on it. Building that shit from the ground up is murder (pixel eight was hell on earth and it doesn't even do much).

Anyone have any suggestions? I've dabbled in DotNetNuke but I'm having a bitch of a time getting all the CSS junk out of it that torches any skin I make for it. I'd like anything that's open source, easy to set up and easy to extend. Anyone work with anything else that's notable? I'd gladly sink some time into it because I have already been trying to make a new site.

I'm usually a fan of open source, but from experience I've found out an ugly side of using OSS forums/CMS: they require quite a bit of maintenance to make sure they're not hacked! Some script kiddies will google search for "trademarks" of systems they know the exploit of, deface it, and post a message trying to be cool.

I've seen a bunch of PHPBB go down like this. It also happened on my Gallery sites, twice. It's nothing that good backing up and regular updating won't prevent, but it's very annoying. I'd rather build a site that I know I can forget about and will still survive. Or simply use some of the "free" sites for the same purpose (e.g. share pictures).

you might want to think about something as simple as wordpress+some forum software. wordpress will allow you to have categories, posters with different rights, etc. i'm a lurker, but it would be awesome to have something like retrogames actually posting news again.
