SubjectI need a shotgun new Reply to this message

A 3 1/2 foot rattler was in my yard. I don't have a shotgun, so I tried to hit it with my .32 pistol. I hoped not to freak out the neighbors. It was still louder than I thought, and I only winged the fucker. Fucking hard to shoot a mother fucking snake with a pistol. It'll die eventually, but boy is it pissed in the meantime.

I was doing my morning jog and damn near stepped on a decent sized snake. No idea what kind it was, but if it bit then I still would have had 2 miles or so to go :(

From 100m away with an assault rifle I could get head shots easily enough I can't imagine +-5m a snake with a pistol would be too hard. I've never shot a pistol so please enlighten me.

I hit it's neck but not bad enough to immediately kill it. It was a Beretta Tomcat .32. The shot was loud enough, I wasn't going to take a second one and piss off the neighbors. It wasn't so much hitting it, it was hitting it precisely where it would kill it. A good shot could do it. But I hate snakes, and yes my hand probably did shake. Despite that I'm sure it's last hours weren't a good.

In 2000 AR-15s became illegal in Kali. And even if I still had it, no way am I shooting it in my yard. I'm not that red neck yet. But with the scope I had on it, yeah putting a shot in the head would be easy.

Nice Gun. I didn't try the subcompact, but I should rent it the next time I'm there. If it shoots like it's big brother I'd get one.

Snakes are hard to hit with a pistol period; you're right that a shotgun would generally be more effective. I'd recommend the Remington 870 - they're cheap, available pretty much everywhere (since you're in CA, I'd start with Big 5 Sporting Goods or similar), very reliable, and have a lot of options for customisation.

Snake shot loads for your pistol may be an option, but I have to admit that I've never had particularly good luck with it the couple of times I've used it out in the desert.

You may want to read this. Yes, it's long, but extremely important that you understand the current legalities behind the situation if you're thinking of building one. And for God's sake, don't order anything via MetroShot - that guy's a tard-and-a-half.
