If you pop open the scanner, there should be a clean, white strip inside the cover near where the bulb starts scanning. That is a "white calibration" strip. If it's really dirty (or worse, missing), that could be affecting things.

(Made the mistake once before of taking apart a scanner and taking the strip out; all black scans right after).
