I live in the sticks, and people are still lining up at AT&T. I heard I can't even afford the data contract required for one of those.

something like the minimum call plan is $60 a month and the data plan is $40-50 depending on where you read. Plus a $600 phone + tax + service fees.

My technologically naive friend who needed me to pick out a new PC for him, was trying to tell me the iPhone is like having a mini-computer with you and how "sweet" it looks. I told him he was an idiot.

2000 bucks in a year for phone service? Fuck that shit.

The shitty part is that with the sucess it seems to be having, soon the market will be flooded with over the top priced products and people who don't want a "mini computer" for a fucking phone will be fucked in the ass.

All work and no play makes me..., well, you know the rest.

For the $600 however I told him to get this.

At least it IS a mini computer and it has some sort of addon slot to the right of the monitor (that one has a place holder) where you should be able to plug in a wireless access card of some type and it does VoIP. Not exactly a phone, but it's much more versatile and I'm sure it could be paired with a phone to give you a million times more functionality than that overpriced piece of apple crap.

Then chuckle for the rest of the year and listen to him complain as he deals with upgrades and high monthly payments.

People will bitch and whine about the PS3's price but then they'll line up like drones while they wait for their new Apple gadget.

Apple fans are batshit insane.

Now that looks badass: http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/spearhead/nanobook/

Seems to also support phone already too with optional accessory. I think my only gripe there is not knowing how I'd install crap to it. Guess you'd need to buy a cheap external USB DVD drive or dvd/cd burner I suppose.

If I got one I'd use that for some of my gaming and just general usage as this 6yo sucka ain't going to last forever and some nights I'm bored and she's using the PC.

You can get 8gb on a stick that will fit on your key chain for a relatively reasonable price these days.

I'm sure it will have a docking station type accessory or an external optical drive as you mentioned, but I'd seriously just use Daemon Tools + ISO's on a the flash drive to load stuff or even load stuff over a network. You only need to install stuff once tho.

It may not be the most high powered machine but it's light, tiny, and much more versatile than a PDA or smartphone with the possibility of using Openoffice or MS Office.

If some linux geeks get their hands on it, it may end up getting a nicely tuned OS that can take better advantage of the hardware than MS's Windows, however that'd be a long shot.
