I have a bunch of pics with black borders on them. Anyone know an app that can crop the borders, and then spit out new files without re-compressing the image?

Unless you're going to be saving in a different (ie. lossless) format, you're going to be recompressing the image when you crop it. The best you can hope for is to increase the quality level of the jpeg (if that's what they're in) to minimize the amount of quality loss when cropping.

I like using XnView to do all of that basic stuff because it's a lot like what ACDSee was like back before it became horribly bloated. Plus it's free, which is always a good thing.

Not true. In theory, if you are happy to crop to 16 pixel boundaries you should be able to do it without recompressing. A quick google for 'crop jpeg "no recompress"' yielded a bunch of (commercial) results that claimed to do just that. I could have sworn there was some free code somewhere to do this though, or perhaps it was rotate instead. It's much like mp3trim and trimming to frame-boundaries.

The pics are mostly 1600x1200, so 16 pixels wont do it. Lossless at 1600x1200 will probably result in some massive file sizes, but I guess that's how it has to be.

I never knew about this sucker. Neat stuff. Boundary limitations kinda bite, but it's better than not being able to do it at all.

Subjectyou could try this after the recompressed crops new Reply to this message
