EMS USB2 and two PS2 Dualshock controllers.

Have dual joysticks for games like Robotron, Smash TV, and Total Carnage.

Have analogue driving + gas for driving games.

Have 10 Buttons (4 face, 4 l/r triggers, 2 under the analogue sticks)

Start/Select button doubles as coin/start for arcades.

Seriously the best "all around" gamepad/joystick combo plus they're built sturdy and also have force feedback for the games that support it.

SubjectSaitek P2500 and PS1 pad new Reply to this message

The Saitek P2500 works awesome for pretty much everything except for PS1 emulation, which is where the PS1 pad rocks (obviously). I've even gotten the hang of using the P2500 for N64 games where it works surprisingly well.

Since picking up two of these back in '03/'04, I haven't used anything else. I damn near refuse to.

If they made a Saitek pad that had the 6 face buttons AND 4 triggers, it would be the ultimate. Another way to think of it would be a PS Dualshock pad with two more face buttons. That way it could easily map genesis and n64 as well. Unfortunately, no such pad exists, that I can find.

Got both PS1 and a Saitek, but the wireless one. I should have bought the rumble one bc I don't use the wireless so much... I'm thinking of getting one sooner or later. But yeah, Saitek's good.

with the Nimbus Old Monkeyshine mod.

The button layout works well for both SNES and Genesis/Saturn layouts, and with d-pad, analog and all the buttons, you can hack together a workable N64 layout. For PS1 you're missing the dual shoulder buttons, and a separate (or, alternatively, properly placed) start/select buttons. Its replacement, the P990, does have the dual shoulder buttons. It doesn't bother me, since I don't do any PS1 emulation.

I'm reasonably happy with my P880, although the mod made the buttons stick, and after pulling it apart to clean it, the shoulder buttons are a little flaky unless you push hard.

No start/select buttons (which is a must for me with start/coin in MAME) and it uses that goofy disk dpad :-\

Adaptoid which takes a N64 controller. Works best for me with emulation and PC games as it can go analog or digital quite well so playing a platformer or a game like Wing Commander works either way. The ONLY drawback is a rare case like the Geometry Wars excellent rip off Grid Wars 5.4 where it won't run at best without dual analogs.

Adaptoid also is nice as it allows use of any N64 addon pack such as rumble (any rumble emu/win game will use it,) store n64 saves off a ram pack or load games via n64 emu works too (and you can go between cart and pc rom as well safely.)

Goofy disk pad? The pad is pure sex. Really comfortable and pretty precise. I use it for shmups without the slightest problem. The only solution I've found that's even remotely as good is using the pad for whatever system you're emulating and hooking it up through an adapter...but even then, I prefer the Saitek in most instances because of the comfort factor.

I use the L and R buttons for coin / start in MAME and Genesis, the equivalent of Z and C for start/select in NES and SNES, L3 for L and R3 for Start in N64, etc. Works fairly well. With the 990, you can use Z/C for start/select in PS1 emulation...though the resized versions of the buttons on the 990 wouldn't work quite as well for N64 emulation as the 880 or 2500.

Anyone who prefers a PS1's dpad for anything other than PS1 games is just batshit insane (and hates their thumb).

Stick + 6 buttons
perfect layout for almost everything i play.
i donīt do a lot of ps1 and almost ever n-64.. so not a problem.

besides itīs the best way to play any fighter, any shmup and almost any side-scroller.

but for the systems i own, i donīt emulate them, unless itīs a hard to find game or playing over the internet..
so nes, snes, sms, genesis and saturn, i play the real thing.

I used to have a logitech-pad, a few years ago, but that sucked chuncks. Now I have a Saitek 2500, and it's the bees-knees. I use the red S button as start and Input as select.

SubjectHotrod SE, 360 wireless, gameport MS Sidewinder new Reply to this message
Posted byMegaHurtz
Posted on08/09/07 05:05 PM

The Hotrod is fantastic for the vast majority of arcade games I play. I even managed to get it working on my xbox with some black magic, but it only works for one player.

The Sidewinder was my controller of choice for years for console emulation, I even bought a couple extra to daisy chain when I found a guy at a computer fair selling them for $5 a pop. I avoided the usb ones since they had a reputation of having a wretched d-pad, but I've read a few reviews of later usb models that had a better pad.

Some of the recent console ports to pc had me wanting a dual analog controller for them. I think one of the Saitek pads would actually be a better general purpose controller for emulation since it has 6 face buttons and 4 triggers, but I already had a couple 360 controllers. They're great for console ports, but I don't like them for emulators. The d-pad ranks right up there with the PSP one in terms of crapiness and there are only 4 face buttons. The MS drivers for the 360 controller are also pretty suck-tastic and extremely basic. You can use the XBCD drivers instead, which are FAR better, but they only work for the wired 360 pads. And no, you can't convert your wireless pad into a wired one with a play and charge kit :(
