I've read from sources that the problem is due to shoddy soldering, not because Microsoft opted for cheaper solder but because better, lead based solder (better able to stand up to the effects of heating/cooling so it doesn't crack and permanently detach from the pcb) in a home product such as a console is against the law/EPA/etc... something along those lines. So that's what happens when you put a bunch of heat producing parts in a small area and use cheaper manufacturing techniques. Basically they're forced to manufacture them shittily, if I may make up a word.
