CNN article. They must be counting on a hell of a catalog coming up.

I know the peoples in Euroland got "screwed" by Sony removing PS2 hardware (the EmotionEngine (tm)) from the Euro PS3's but they still played PS2 titles through some sort of emulation. I can't see them cutting software support in the PS3 unless it really sucked. I can see them cutting the PS2 chips from the US PS3 to make it cheaper though.

I would want to see that verified by another source.

It's noted in the bottom paragraph. It even says get the 80GB while you can.

SubjectHmm, terrible move. They just don't have the market to make such a deep cut. new Reply to this message

And the PS2 was/is the highest selling console ever, backwards compabilty is a great way to get people to buy one and maintain their collections.

Sony's got to watch out, or they'll go the way of Sega with such a long succession of dumb moves.

All work and no play makes me..., well, you know the rest.

maybe its a marketing scam... maybe they will "change there mind" down the road once some of the people scared of it going away go buy there own so they don't loose the feature... the only question i have if they don't put it in new models will they stop support for game bugs with the current versions that do have it?

If the Euro models could pull at least a minimal software mode, I'm wondering what other concessions were made going to this new model, because one would think that the base PS3 hw minus the PS2 parts would be the same across all models.

If the consumer goes with the 40GB, they're locked out of playing ps2 games, so in order to make there purchase worth the price tag, they're forced to purchase (1)$60 ps3 games, (2)Blu-Ray movies, and (3) PS1 games from the online store. That's where they make there profit. Gamestop's are still littered with cheap used ps2 games, and ps1 games are virtually non-existent there anymore. Reducing the price to 400 results in even more money lost on each ps3 sold. If they want ps2 compatiblity, then you're forced to pay the extra 100/200 for it. It works out better for them.

The reason why the screwed it all up was when they ditched the hardware in the 80GB, and opted for software driven emulation. Now everyone's wondering why the fuck is it excluded from the 40GB when it's software emulation, since that would mean that there's no extra price is incurred to leave it in. Had they left the hardware in the 80GB's when they released it, then the damage control would be much easier to sustain.

They're struggling to drop the price on the damn thing so that people will actually buy it. Fuck it, if lobbing off PS2 backwards compatibility entirely saves $100, then go for it. It's not like you can't get a new slim PS2 for almost that price anyway.

The shitty thing is that it sets a new precedent for Sony and they may very well deemphasize backwards compatibility in future consoles to keep the entry price down. It may make sense from a business point of view, but I fucking love having a singular console that does it all.

Who knows? Perhaps they'll do some magic in the background and one day roll out a full software-based PS2 emulator that works across all of their models (with optional hardware functions for 20/60/80 models). Unlikely, but it'd be nice.

The PS3 can't play PS2 games off of the hard drive so I couldn't give a shit whether it has PS2 support or not. I have a PS2 Hard Drive setup already. When Gran Turismo 5 comes out, I'm going to want a PS3, so this should save me some bread.

In the US and Japan PS3s, both chips (the Emotion engine and another - the GPU, maybe, or is the Emotion chip the GPU? Anyway, whatever) are present - in the Euro ones, just one chip is present, and the other is emulated in the software. The new price-point PS3 eliminates both chips.

Sony sucks balls right now. I'm just waiting for the PS2 to hit £50 in the UK again and will grab one (although with Okami coming out for the Wii, perhaps I won't need to!).

Edit: Some actual details here

The #1 reason I upgraded to ps2 was that my ps1 was dying. My other reason was I didnt have a DVD player. Im lucky to still have my release day ps2 in perfect working condition, I've only had to clean it out once. PS3 doesnt play PS2 i dont have that reason to get one. I definitly couldnt give a dead moose's last shit about blu ray. This by far is the stupidest thing I have heard from sony in a long time. I never really had my mind set on getting any of the next gen consoles anyways, but this total makes me not want to buy a ps3. I hope this console takes an early death to the 360 like how sony killed the 3do. It only seems fitting.

We can get $100 off. The ones who want PS2 can buy a $100 PS2.

Your idea of PS3 having an early death seems nice though as long as GT5 comes out. Then I could get a hell of a deal. It wont happen though. 3DO was a company that should have been selling ass wipes. This is Sony. They have too much money.

Every interview that guy did turned into a scat party. I'm glad 3DO failed; if it hadn't we'd still be putting up with Trip Hawking's bullshit.
