SubjectVideo card question Reply to this message

Sorry to bother, but iīm really out of the loop in this whole videocard/gaming pc business, iīm only keeping up with the stuff i need for work (which doesnīt include videocards)

Anyway, my old Geforce 3 is now obsolete, to the point, where i canīt play the games i want anymore.

I donīt care about pretty graphics or shiny effects, i just want to run the damn things at a reasonable speed, so everything turned off is a option.
Lately i got 2 games, and both failed on me.
Outrun 2006 and Transformers.

So i saw this :
128Mb GeForce 6200LE
for a pretty good price.

Is it worth the couple of bucks iīm willing to invest.
Really,i donīt want anything expensive.

Will this run these 2 games and my older stuff ? (nfsu, nfsu2, gp4, gplegends, etc, etc).

if so, i might grab this.
Any ideas ?
thanks.

Check out Tom's Hardware's The Best Gaming Graphics cards for the Money: December 2007 and his Desktop VGA Charts for 2007.

I have a Radeon 800XL AIW card with an AGP interface and was happy playing Half Life 2: episodes 1 & 2 with it.

The 6200 LE is no better than your Geforce 3. It's reaaally bottom of the barrel shit.

Let me know your whole system and price range and i'll give you some reccomendations. Plus, you're in RS, so it might be a bit easier for you to get shit coming off Paraguay.

All work and no play makes me..., well, you know the rest.

Celeron 2.0ghz processor
Asus Mobo (P4-SUS (or something like that))
784mb RAM DDR
HDs: 60GB Seagate IDE + 4gb Seagate IDE
IDE DVD Drive
SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Soundcard PCI
On-board Lan
Geforce 3 videocard (like, duh?)

Itīs a shitty machine for gaming, i know, but i usually play
emulators (such as old school mame stuff (early 90īs stuff, at best) psx stuff and dosbox), and the games i have from way back then, such as nfs3, gp4, gta3 and vice city, toca2, v-rally, nfsu and u2, porsche unleashed, etc. (yeah, i like racing games, heh).

My budget would bt at tops : 200 reais.
i have some more money, but iīll be investing into a new hdd, (this machine is first and foremost, my "omg i am musician who records stuff at home" machine).
but i would be thinking at invest as little as possible to play a couple of these games i mentioned, like i said, iīm targetting at running them at 640x480 without a lot of fancy effects.

...really hard to find something worth buying that'll give you good performance for anything made in the past 4-5 years, plus for anything worthwhyle, you'd need a new mobo with a PCI Express slot.

You should keep a look out for used items at http://www.adrenaline.com.br/forum/index.php

I bought my 7600gt there for a great price.

Also, given your CPU, i wouldn't reccomend buying anything higher than a Geforce 7600GS or Radeon X1650, the CPU will be a huge bottleneck, plus, you're stuck with an AGP card, so you really aren't gonna do much better than that.

You could probably find a 7600GS for around 200 Reais used. Make sure it's in good shape, that the seller didn't do any abusive overclocking, etc. And pay attention on weather the card is AGP or PCI-E.

PC gaming is too damned expensive to keep up with.

but, not that good that something made 3 generations later would still give it a run for itīs money.
Weird.

Anyway, the main problem with my card, apparently, is the (lack of) support to pixel shaders.
And some textures.

Transformers doesnīt even start. Complains about Pixel Shaders.
And on Outrun2006 i canīt see the tracks or the cars.

i was thinking about investing as little as possible now, and on the end of next year, get a whole new machine. But i usually just browse the net, play some emulators and play guitar through the computer, so i donīt need a beast machine.

I will look for some deals on used cards.
And yeah, i know iīm stuck with AGP, which is main concern about even touching this machine, itīs not like i could buy a kickass card (woot for credit cards!) now, and when i upgrade it, put it in the new mobo.

But thanks for the info...
