SubjectMaster System rocking it out bigtime - deals on goodies new Reply to this message

Decided with some Christmas cash this year I'd finally pick up a Sega Master System as I got hooked on that stupid Coleco 20in1 thing they had for sale at Target. Locally this dude had this ad on Craigslist for an in box, complete SMS with 2 pads, light gun, and tossed in 7 games with it...total $40. Reality was it still had some plastic safety crap on the face of the unit and on the gun sides...very lightly used. I got Great Baseball and Basketball, Zillion 1 and 2, Outrun, and HangOn-Safari Hunt with all that.

Next step was checking local...nothing but one place in town, had just 3 games of which I took 2 (Great Golf is horrid) but Casino Games and Reggie Jackson Baseball are nice for $15. Everything I've had to this rate is boxed except Zillion, most with manuals and poster.

Then I hit ebay and nailed some goldmines on deals...mostly.
First I got 4 from one guy for $15+ship and they were R-Type $2.25, Wonderboy in Monsterland 6cents (cart only), Sonic 2 $7.50, and Castle of Illusion $5.25.

I then had 4 particulars I wanted they were alone...only didn't do 'well' getting normal value on one...Phantasy Star for $25. Got Wonderboy 3 for $20 free ship, Ys Book 1 for $5.50, and Columns for $5.50 too.

The real goldmine though was a lot of 12 games I got for just $16! All them in box, only 2 with books (no big deal) and they are Govellius, Shinobi, The Ninja, Alien Syndrome, Choplifter, Enduro Racer, Double Dragon, Spellcaster, Rambo 2, Rampage, Miracle Warriors, and Kung Fu Kid.

Between the ebay buys was $130 w/ship... and then $55 locally between the original pickup and the 2 others. Definitely a 'Roushi' moment with the dealing there on the games for sure and the hardware. Was quite a trip reading through the SMS books, posters, and the rest...makes me wish I still had the NES one. :\

...I'm hoping in time to nab some Brazilian gems like Battletoads among others...and quite a few EU only titles too. Hot on my want it now list is Alex Kidd, Sonic 1, and more light gun stuff...afterburner too. Any other suggestions?

It wasn't my intention to blow smoke up your ass. Ethier the stuff was in an unlabled box in the back, it got stolen/donated, it's at my mother's house, or it's in a storage room my brother has backed up full of stuff. I'll keep looking for it. If my mother has it, I'm not going other there. I found a bunch of 32X carts and Geneisis CDs if you're interested.

I know it'll be a long time before I give away Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, or a few other Super Nintendo games, ditto for a number of other retro systems where I have the cartridges or disks digitally preserved.

There's something cool about plugging in a real cartridge or CD into an old console. I'm not that big on the NES or Atari 2600, I was willing to part with them, but I have a soft spot for the Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Playstation.

I even kept over 1/2 of my Sega CD library when I gave the console away. Someday I'll finish Popful Mail!

I have to have the real deal too. I picked up FFIII, Chrono Trigger AND Secret of Mana for $45 a few years back. Scored bigtime.

Wonderboy in Monsterland, Alien Syndrome and Tennis Ace.

Never had a SMS, but some friends of mine did, and that's what we used to play.

I recall that I found the gamepad to be horrible, though. Maybe because I was comparing them to my C64 Albatros joysticks, which were totally awesome for the time being (and surely much more robust than nowaday's controllers):

We have a winner.

Yes I am not above using a copier cart now and again as I had a GB/C 'Bung' cart and then 2 GBA carts such as the Flash2Advance. But as anyone here who has seen I still had like dozens of GB/C and GBA games when I had those things too as if I like it enough I'll buy it.

I personally can't much at this point yet rationalize getting a SMS copier cart. I may want it in time as the Brazilian goodies will be a whore to grab, some PAL stuff too, and that there is where some really killer titles popped up being outside of the NOA influence of near monopolization...but caused them to be scarce.

The stuff I grabbed (mostly) are things I wanted 'real' copies of. A game or two in the lots, and those gay f'n 'Great' (hardly unless Great at crappiness counts) Sports games just were the price to pay for the nicer things.

I see it as that I spent basically $130~ christmas cash (and $30 of my own for Phantasy Star) for a basically unused SMS setup and a shit ton of damn good games which has more value to me than a copier cart does.

Oh yah...I also checked that homepage, looked through the entire 'product' area for copiers, etc...it's no longer for sale, not even listed.

is that you can see what the game is like before you send your $$$ on it.

Of course if you're collecting, it doesn't matter what you
get. The best of luck in your searches! Ever think about
checking out the goodwill stores, flea markets, or pawn
shops? They're a great source of older games.

And if you remember that's why actually I got the GB/C and GBA copiers over the years as the emulators were shit until it was fairly too late. This time though the DS stuff works, but my computer is shit...and seeing I have to use this years tax check to replace it, that'll get covered as I know with its adding issues and frequency it won't make an 09 tax check.

Well basically I've checked anything in town here that carries old stuff. Book and Music Exchange, a shitty place I can't remember the name that tosses all but the cd's/carts themselves, various other bits, goodwill. Sega just isn't much around here as I see vastly fewer Genesis, nearly no Saturn or the stuff between, light DC, and no SMS.

There was just this one place and he had 3, kept 2, but has a SMS in storage and some games and will call me when it is dug out so I get first pick. Store was awesome, put the 40 Year Old Virgin to shame with the rare out(some in) box figures going back into the 70s. I got a boxed up Indiana Jones 10" vinyl only sold at the CA Disneyland when it opened for $20 (he had $30 on it but was being nice.) :D

It's what eBay used to be, minus any fees.

Give us a list of what you're looking for. If I stumble across anything that you're after, I'll let you know.

Oh I do...didn't I mention it before? I got the Master System from there for $40 that got me started. The local was someone in the Kentucky Air Guard who had it all pretty and very barely used in box with those 7 games of ranging quality. I've next to never seen a SMS game let alone unit pop up so I jumped at it once I got my Christmas cash this year (was up about 10days before.)

Far as what I'm looking for is nothing strongly much right now as I have all that coming in, but I am watching.

If anything I really need to nail down Alex Kidd, as I said, that game got the most use along with Fantasy Zone on that portable I had that got me wanting the real hardware. I do want the SMS Sonic1, Gauntlet is stellar, Indiana Jones 3, and the brazilian Battletoads and Street Fighter 2 look good. I'm really not all sure what I want outside of the US stuff I can get totally easy off ebay if I bide my time...even the pricey zelda clone of Golden Axe Warrior.

I have stacks of books, CDs, DVDs, and (PC) games (diving into thirty-plus years of consoles is rather daunting for a packrat on limited funds), and even though I can download whatever at a moment's notice (and in many cases have), I wouldn't give up my physical collection up for anything, nor will the availability of free shit on the internets deter me from my RL collecting.

Don't get me wrong... I've gotten a bunch of stuff that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise, but there's a really good chance that at some point, I'll go out and pick up the real thing if I like it. There's something about having the originals around close at hand that appeals to me (see "packrat"), with the e-copy there just in case (see "backup").
