The person who does this job does it because they want to fulfill an important position and make the right choices. Not for glory, fame, and power, because the power is not for their own ends. The fame (or infamy) should be a byproduct of the job. The glory should be a byproduct of doing a good job at it.
The president's salary should be minimum wage, because that's what people are expected to live on. If the president wants more, hey, just raise minimum wage.
The president should not be able to accept any gifts of any sort so they don't bypass the previous provision, and so they don't get bribed. Cops have this rule, why not our other public servants?
The president should have their house and computer and offices etc etc hooked up to surveillance just to make sure they're not crooked. Checks and balances. It's not the rest of their life, just 4 years. Just because you're president doesn't mean you're not subject to the same temptations everyone else is. People in public can be watched, and they're working for the public. It's the public's duty and best interest to make sure this job gets done properly.
The president shouldn't really keep getting paid after they're out of office. Being president isn't winning the lottery.
All this should guarantee that the person who wants the job just really wants it badly for the right reasons, and will do the right job. Why settle for less?
Discuss.
Hey don't mind me, I'm not sober.
