Is Gates of Thunder as good?

I always feel ripped off the next day, but that doesn't stop me from buying the same games again the next time.

Here's my VC Collection so far:

Super Mario Bros 1
Super Mario Bros 3
Pac Man
Bubble Bobble
Ninja Gaiden
Star Fox 64
Mario Kart 64
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Simcity
Legend of Zelda : LTTP

I am nintendo's bitch.

I tried buying a few N64 games that emulators never got 100%. It's shitty though, N64 VC games still have some problems some emulators do (such as Mario not fading in/out correctly when warping in Mario 64).

So I guess I'm not buying any. I own quite a few games two or three times, so enough already, and I've got an all-in-one emulator box hooked up to my TV. I'm nice and legal. VC also lacks some nice features emulators have such as graphics smoothing, and save states so I can bookmark my favorite parts of the game or skip to cinematics.

I avoid buying games on the VC that I already own in the original console or as part of another package. Sure it'd be nice to play SMW and LTTP on the Wii, but I've already paid premium price when they just got out.

If it was cheap enough ($1-$2) I'd buy them by the shovel and probably spend more than what I would spend now. But at $8-$9 for a SNES/GEN/PCE game, I need to think twice before buying it.

Also I'm unhappy that SSB:Brawl has demos and not full games (especially since I believe these would have been full versions if the VC did not exist!), but at least it gave me a chance to try the N64 games and I was not impressed.

Actually from what I've read (never tried it) if you exit out of a VC game through the HOME button and into the menu it does a savestate of where you're at so you can pick it up later, but if you just bail (power off) it obviously due to that (being cut off) won't.

Might want to try that.

Yes it works like that. It's good enough if you need to stop playing immediately to do something else. Not all the systems support it though; the Neo Geo and (I think) the N64 do not have it. PC16 and NES definitely has it (not tried games for other systems yet).

Yeah I noticed that at a friend's, but if you load the save state then it deletes itself, and there's no way to specify slots, so I guess you can't keep more than one. I'm sure that's fine for most people but it doesn't help me do what I described...

Well the point was I just wanted to state that it was there in a form which would satisfy most people who can't just sit there for a few hours and wipeout SMB3 or something as you can do it safely in chunks.

The VC really gives the bare minimum. Once you have been using an emu box (GP2X in my case), you get used to all kind of options. Given the choice (and assuming accurate emulation) I will always prefer to play on an emu because of the extra features. E.g. I got rid of a lot of tediousness in Phantasy Star II by speeding up the game to 150% and using a few save states to avoid having to repeat the whole dungeon from a cheap random encounter that went wrong.

I see what you're saying, especially on that RPG as it can be a bitch (used to own a copy of it years ago.) I personally for some depraved reason have never used save states (except in earlier emulation when saves didn't work, so I 'fake' saved at the save spots. I've also never found those GP2X, Eagle, etc type visuals good looking in the least bit as I'm one who shoots for accuracy not assumed improvement. To each their own I guess, perhaps that's why I like what Nintendo did with the VC more than many in the emulation community as I never spoiled myself.

I probably wouldn't have had the idea of "optimize" the gameplay in that way if it wasn't for the fact that the GP2X is a portable console. I played it on the commute (about 1hr each way) and I wanted to maximize what I could get done. Also because it was on a noisy train, I didn't care about sound... so speeding up would not result in my ears being destroyed by high pitched crap.

The VC is a step in the right direction. While expensive, one can only expect the prices to go down. They may not add gameplay enhancing options as it cheapens the game (makes games shorter/easier), but maybe we will get some filtering.

But what I would really like to see is Nintendo selling a rom service. Basically, let me download the rom and use it with whatever I want. Atari did it with a CD of Atari games... Capcom released some games packaged with the Hanaho Hotrod... so maybe there's hope.

I would just like to see a cart adapter for the Wii. Plug it into USB, and it has slots for N64, NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS, TG16, Neo Geo, GameBoy (why the fuck aren't there GameBoy games on VC?), GBA, etc. Yeah it would be an ugly product, but it would let me play all of my original games on one system.

I dug out an emu for the GP2X and I realized how ass ugly and limited many GB games are compared to their NES counterparts. At the time, it didn't matter because it was the only available portable gaming choice. Some games did manage to pull nicer graphics (e.g. SML2) and I like the chiptune music most titles have... I still play the odd round of Picross.. but I feel most games didn't really age well.

Or maybe it's because the Wii is not a portable console, and they don't want to blur the lines with the existing GBA and DS products. I guess it's the same reason why there are no arcade games available, they don't want to open the can of worms. (and also, these games are too easy with unlimited continues... which is why Neogeo in MVS mode gives you 4 credits).

There are some good games on the GB that aren't available anywhere else. Kirby 1 & 2, SML 1 & 2, Wario Land series, TMNT series, Operation C, Zelda, Metroid II

Those are better than some of the games on VC already such as Ice Climbers.

Yeah, I'm disappointed there isn't a Game Boy Player for the Wii. I liked my Game Boy Player for the Gamecube. There are some good game boy games, more color games, and a shitload of Gameboy Advance games.

Of course now that the Gameboy Advance and SP are discontinued, Nintendo would want you to purchase them virtually. They don't want gamers playing games that aren't making them money!

:)
