Well I got a new powerhouse of a PC custom built for me from Dell a couple weeks back (got a great corporate deal + free ship or I would have self built.) Vista Home Premium came on it and I was not thrilled, but couldn't get it setup how I wanted with XP.
So far I like the look of it, and the Start button menu is very very refined and easier to use. You don't have that branched out tree anymore all over the screen as it just stays in the box and you can back arrow out of it if need be. Also if you're wanting speed, there is a box area right above start where you can type a few letters and it just finds what you want to click to start. I disabled all the stupid shit stuff like the widgets and stuff on the desktop and took it into a slimline mode. All I have running on it at start is the Dell info alerts thing and I put AVAST Antivirus (disabled the rest) on which is updated basically everyday and keeps the shitty malware from websites/email out of my face.
I hear that Vista is a whore unless you have 2GB of ram even though 1GB is required, but I have 3GB so maybe that's why I'm liking it. Totally agree you have to early on disable first that damn warning system as it nags about anything you try putting in/out of a computer or setting to change like you're a retard with a nuke in front of you. As is now, things are smooth, fast, responsive, and actually so far more easier to find.
