Anything good out there? I've been doing TurboTax for a few years but I wouldn't mind shaving off the overhead. Any thoughts?

My government has a free online based service. Surely you must have something similar from your government.

Free file from irs.gov is a list of websites that, in most cases, will do your federal taxes and efile them for you for free if you meet certain criteria. This is how I've filed my taxes the past 3-4 years, and I've never had a problem.

Most of the sites will also do and efile your state taxes for a modest fee like $10.

Info from irs.gov:

Important notes before you begin and things you should consider before choosing a Free File Company

  • If the amount is not specified, Free File online tax preparation and e-file services are limited to taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income of $56,000 or less.
  • Companies are not required to support all forms and schedules to participate in Free File so you should check the company's website to determine which forms are available.
  • For more details about the Free File online tax preparation and e-file service companies, access the company's website.
