SubjectReasons to NOT hack Wii? new Reply to this message

I'm trying to find out why I shouldn't have my Wii and I can't really think of any. I think the only drawback is that you won't be able to connect to any Nintendo online stuff but I never use that.

I really want to hack it so I can download the Virtual Console games.

I finally put the Wii Key 2 and wiiclip in mine. I want to be able to play Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and every Wii software release they disable the twilight hack, or whatever else it takes to install a softmod.

Yeah once in a while an update comes that fixes these but it seems like once you have the homebrew channel installed they can't get rid of it from your wii, yet. Anyway, that's why there's programs like preloader to skip disc updates and allow you to boot hbc if your wii is bricked.

I have softmodded it with Twilight Hack, but I haven't downgraded the IOS 'cause it's said to be brick prone...

Result: I am now able to run homebrew sw, but not backup copies of games.

Homebrew apps worth having: emulators (including scummvm, dosbox... everything except mame), mplayer_ce, some silly homebrew games.

Thanks to the latest HBC and hack, you don't even need Zelda to softmod it, and it's practically brick proof if you install BootMii (there's an installer available).

Risks:
- Nintendo may one day kill homebrew (not sure they can't get rid of the homebrew channel, it feels more like they tolerate it)
- Nintendo may ban you from its servers (but up to now it happened only to people cheating at Mario Kart Wii)

Once you have homebrew, you don't need to get virtual console games. As far as WiiWare is concerned, it's safe to update the system menu (I did to 4.0E) and buy stuff from the Wii Shop (I'm looking forward to seeing Cave Story). With future updates, YMMV.

Go for it. I modded mine with a WiiKey when they first came out. Since then I loaded Homebrew, have a 4gb SD card loaded with Emu's and games. Just recently I picked up a 1tb drive and have all my games loaded on the hd with this app:
