I did the x-clamp fix when mine first RRoD'd. I think that bought me about 9 months. Then I RRoD'd again and decided to remove the shit thermal paste MS uses and use some arctic silver instead. MUCH better. Between that and replacing the x-clamps, I've gone over a year without any issues.
I think (hope) that the newest Jasper motherboards should fix, or at least greatly reduce, the number of RRoDs. Sad part is, MS is still shipping older revisions of motherboards back from the service center, so even with your "fixed" xbox, it is still likely to RRoD again at some point.
Makes me sad that in 20 years (or even 10? 5?) it will be pretty difficult to find a functioning 360. MS better have some kickass backwards compatibility with their next console. And no hardware gremlins, but that goes without saying.
