I'm still reading threads about 360s with the red ring of death. I thought they fixed this problem.

you can temporarily fix that with 3 towels and 20 mins of your time ;)

I did the x-clamp fix when mine first RRoD'd. I think that bought me about 9 months. Then I RRoD'd again and decided to remove the shit thermal paste MS uses and use some arctic silver instead. MUCH better. Between that and replacing the x-clamps, I've gone over a year without any issues.

I think (hope) that the newest Jasper motherboards should fix, or at least greatly reduce, the number of RRoDs. Sad part is, MS is still shipping older revisions of motherboards back from the service center, so even with your "fixed" xbox, it is still likely to RRoD again at some point.

Makes me sad that in 20 years (or even 10? 5?) it will be pretty difficult to find a functioning 360. MS better have some kickass backwards compatibility with their next console. And no hardware gremlins, but that goes without saying.

I think the N64 will be the "newest" gaming console to be around in 20 years, unless the Gamecube or Wii surprise me and are still around in 2030...

I want a 360 badly, but the crappy hardware really ticks me off. I wonder when I get one how long it will last.

I wanted one for a good stretch but common sense took over and I abandoned it. The first system they had did have some issues and the genre support was bad. This one the hardware is a goddamn nightmare with a 3yr warranty as a 'fix' and while kind of narrow still has more stuff this time around.

I went with PS3, it's solid.

Had one around 3-4 years ago that shit the bed on me... swapped it for new one and it worked fine for 2 years till i sold it. Now rocking an elite for over a year or two and all is well. So still 33% failure for me, so fits the standard... but i don't have any worries in sight.

They just replaced it - I figure this one will tip in less than 12 months too. The good news is, they've got the whole process down to a god damn science. It took less time for them to ship me a new one than it did for me to get off my ass and send it to them in the first place.

The first xbox is built like a fucking tank. The only complaint I can raise against it is that a lot of the early models had really poor dvd drives that crapped out after a few years.

Makes me wonder about this generation and last gen consoles. PS2s had a rep of faulty dvd drives for years. I've heard stories of Dreamcasts having the gd-rom and fan go out. PS1 systems had bad cd-roms where you had to turn the system upside down or put it on its side or something. Xboxes have bad dvd drives. I heard some reports of Wiis having their wifi fry the mobo, although that seems to be a much much smaller issue than any of the others.

Carts really have held up well over the last 30 years. Seems to me that the system manufacturers really need to spend some more cash on the optical drives to extend the life of the systems. Then again, I don't think they care if the system dies on us once its lifecycle is over :(

Got a friend at work which had both his 360 and ps3 die within 2 weeks, he was pretty pissed off. It seems like his bd-rom died, supposedly the #1 cause of ps3 failures which appears to be more frequent than we might think.

As for the 360, I've had my share of problems. My first one went RROD, did the xclamp fix and now it's pretty solid. It will fail when it's too hot but other than that, it's good. However since it's banned I got another one off ebay sold as-is as it wasn't working. The guy did the xclamp fix with some cheap parts. I managed to fix it and it worked fine for almost a year now. It then started to fail, fail and fail. I tried to fix it and I did so many times but it just got worse. I tried the hot air gun fix and it seemed to work for quite a while, till it failed again. I did the fix again but was so angered at it, I wanted it to pay, to burn, and it did, it just wouldn't start anymore. Got me a new 360, unfortunately I got a Falcon but the game that came along with it wasn't working so I returned it and I got another Falcon, meh.

Jaspers seem to be pretty safe now. Still, with my Falcon I put an heatsink on the hdmi scaler chip since it's believed to be reason behind the next huge problem, e74. Still we gotta face it, games now are on a media which is bound to fail quickly. A cart can last dozens of years and thousands of hours of use. My old cart systems still works flawlessly. Disc readers (cd roms, dvd roms, bd roms, shitty roms) are made of parts that just won't last that much, same goes for hard drives that we found in these consoles now, now wonder the old NES still works when newer consoles won't.

Oh and yeah, old xboxes might be built like thanks, but I've seen quite a lot of dead dvd-rom drives and hard drives in these babies. I love the machine but they're all bound to fail at some time, unfortunately. Same goes for "solid" ps3.
