The first xbox is built like a fucking tank. The only complaint I can raise against it is that a lot of the early models had really poor dvd drives that crapped out after a few years.
Makes me wonder about this generation and last gen consoles. PS2s had a rep of faulty dvd drives for years. I've heard stories of Dreamcasts having the gd-rom and fan go out. PS1 systems had bad cd-roms where you had to turn the system upside down or put it on its side or something. Xboxes have bad dvd drives. I heard some reports of Wiis having their wifi fry the mobo, although that seems to be a much much smaller issue than any of the others.
Carts really have held up well over the last 30 years. Seems to me that the system manufacturers really need to spend some more cash on the optical drives to extend the life of the systems. Then again, I don't think they care if the system dies on us once its lifecycle is over :(
