The original Heretic, not II. I have Doomsday v1.86 loaded along with the appropriate Heretic files. If anyone's up for a little multiplayer, I'm game.

What a different way, via two modems. I've tried the serial port to serial port method as well hehe.

I want to connect my laptop to a friend's desktop.

I bought a 5 port workgroup switch:

I have two Cat5e cables to connect each PC to the workgroup switch.

Now what do I do? I've tried setting each up with an IP addy and then use Doomsday v1.86 on each. One is set up as a server and the other as client.

Once I think was able to get one PC to 'see' the other but was unable to get the two Doomsdays to talk.

SubjectMake sure your ips are in the same range. new Reply to this message

My LAN here at home, is with a 8 port switch, and cat5e cables too.

My pc is set at 192.168.0.1 and the other is set at 192.168.0.2
none of them are in a domain.
i set them with the same workgroup and subnet mask.
the dns and gateway are not necessary if you're not going to go online into the internet, but i would set the dns server to be the other pc (like 192.168.0.2 on the first and 192.168.0.1 on the second).

and it should work.

you can try to see if the computers are pinging each other, they should be.
after that, you can probably ping them by hostname.

Now, i never used doomsday, so i dunno about any specifics for it.

But i can go for some Heretic online, if you hook me up with the files.
Maybe we can play some Doom ?

The two machines seem to see each other. On each machine I open up a CMD box and type ping 192.168.1.1 (for example). After I type this it pings the other machine three times or so and everything's ok. I go to the other machine and type in the same command but with a different IP addy and again everything seems ok.

Now in Doomsday, on machine #1 I tell it to host a game. On the other I tell it to join a game. The appropriate IP addies are put in. The server machine functions like it should. The "join a game" machine acts as if it were just started, as if I had never chosen join a game or any other menu item.

I read somewhere that the TCP and UDP port 13209 needed to be open both ways (?) on each machine. I use Zonealarm on my laptop, not sure what my friend uses.

try disabling all the firewalls on both machines, windows built-in firewall and any firewall you installed.

if the machines are seeing each other, then, there should be no problem playing.
But like i said, i never used doomsday, so i might be missing something.
