My LAN here at home, is with a 8 port switch, and cat5e cables too.
My pc is set at 192.168.0.1 and the other is set at 192.168.0.2 none of them are in a domain. i set them with the same workgroup and subnet mask. the dns and gateway are not necessary if you're not going to go online into the internet, but i would set the dns server to be the other pc (like 192.168.0.2 on the first and 192.168.0.1 on the second).
and it should work.
you can try to see if the computers are pinging each other, they should be. after that, you can probably ping them by hostname.
Now, i never used doomsday, so i dunno about any specifics for it.
But i can go for some Heretic online, if you hook me up with the files. Maybe we can play some Doom ?
